Choosing a childcare centre can be very difficult, as you want a family day care facility that is accessible, safe and somewhat structured for your child, and you also want to ensure your child enjoys his or her time while at the centre. Since there are so many factors to consider when choosing a childcare centre, note a few mistakes to avoid during the selection process, and then you know you will have made the best choice for you and for the child you'll be leaving at the facility.

Not considering your child's personality

When choosing a childcare centre, it's good to consider your child's personality so you can find an atmosphere that is comfortable for him or her. If a child is very quiet and shy, it's good for them to be around some other children, but exposing that child to large, noisy groups can be very unpleasant. On the other hand, a very active child with lots of energy may be uncomfortable in a private home, where he or she is expected to be quiet throughout the day. Be sure to balance your child's personality with the atmosphere of a facility so you know he or she won't dread visiting the centre every day.

Not checking the other staff

When touring a childcare facility of any sort, the owner or manager may walk around the area with you, but note if you're introduced to the rest of the staff, or can see who else is working in that centre. It's good to ensure there is an adequate number of staff members available, in case the owner or manager needs time off, as you don't want to suddenly be left without childcare. You also want to note the overall personalities of others at the facility to ensure they would work well with children. Don't make your decision about a facility based on the owner or one manager alone, but be sure you have a general idea of all persons on staff.

Not checking the outdoors

A facility for children should have an outdoor area for the children to run and play, so be sure you check this area. Is the playground equipment in good order, and is the lawn in good repair so that there is less risk of tripping? Is the fence also in good repair so a child isn't likely to get injured if playing near it? Don't hesitate to check all the details of an outdoor space when choosing a childcare facility so you know your child will be safe even during recess or other break times.
