Tipping remains one of the most popular ways to say thanks to service providers such as drivers, waiters or bar-attenders. However, if you're like most parents, you might be unsure of whether you should tip your child care provider and if so, when should you tip?

Your child care provider may be the one person who deserves a little extra now and then. As such, here are five instances when you may want to add a little something to your child carer.

When your childcare provider goes above and beyond

All child care providers are not created equal. Some will interact and entertain your kids, while others will do all of that and much more.

If your childcare provider does more than what is expected, for examples, takes the kids to after-school activities, cleans the house or deals with unusually high-spirited kids, it can be nice to add a little something to the normal pay.

When your childcarer deals with an unexpected situation

Sometimes things beyond your control may happen, and when your child caregiver steps up to the plate, a tip is a kind way of saying thank you.

For example, if you come home later than agreed, your child care provider takes your child to the hospital in case of a medical emergency, a few extra dollars might be reasonable.

When your childcare provider steps up last minute

It can prove extremely difficult to find a good child care provider under normal circumstances. In case of an emergency and you need a child carer on a whim, it's important to have a reliable source. If your child care provider has to be available on short notice, a tip is warranted.

When you want to build a relationship

A tip is a good way to build a relationship with a new child care provider so that they will want to look after your children the next time you need them.

If your working with a new child care provider who is really good with your children, a tip is a good way of keeping her/him and also appreciating their expertise.

Caring for your children during the holidays

Holidays provide an opportunity for you to show your child care providers how grateful you are for all they've done. It's also the perfect time to pay extra for the prime-time slot.

Although many parents will not consider it ''normal'' to tip a child care provider, it is an excellent way to appreciate them for making it easier to manage your life.
